Kipp Stewart: Painting and Designs

11 Feb 2011 - 15 Mar 2011
Kipp Stewart

The works selected for this exhibition covered a forty-year span of the career of Kipp Stewart (born 1928). Although he uses drawing extensively in his design work, he began to paint seriously in 1971. That first painting used the same basic vocabulary that he continues to explore.

Working in series, basic shapes are manipulated, inverted, sliced apart and reconfigured. Color ranges from strong compliments to subtle variations of monochrome, but composition is always paramount. In his designs for furniture and small cabinets, these same geometric components are skillfully blended with function and the exacting craftsmanship of the paintings.
