John Haley: Forms and Space

07 Sep 2004 - 07 Oct 2004

John Haley (1905 – 1991) was a vital force in bringing modern European art concepts to California through his travels and early study with Hans Hofmann in Munich and André Lhote in Paris. In 1930 he began a 42-year teaching career at the University of California, Berkley.

The exhibition is drawn from the holdings of the John Haley Trust through the courtesy of Gregory Ghent. Examples from Haley’s early student renderings show his traditional academic training in drawing. His shift to the Regionalist style of the 1930’s and 40’s  and then his transition to postwar abstraction are all explored. Many of these works are now in the permanent collection of the Hartnell College Gallery, gifts from the Haley Trust.
