At first viewing, Ligare’s (born 1945) Primary Structures seem a radical departure from his widely exhibited paintings inspired by Classical Greek and Roman ideas and models. However, his interest in history led him to investigating the origins of still life painting, a prominent topic in the ancient world. He found the earliest examples of these to be depictions in ancient Egyptian tombs of wall paintings of foods for the afterlife. During a trip to Egypt in 2006 to see these works firsthand, he was struck by the often-elaborate patterns and borders surrounding these images which became the inspiration for these images.
