Hartnell College Art Gallery Presented:
“Larger-Than-Life Visions: José G. Ortiz”

Salinas, CA — On Thursday, November 6th, 2026, The Hartnell College Art Gallery presented “Larger-Than-Life Visions: José G. Ortiz,” an exhibition celebrating the prolific career of artist and educator José G. Ortiz. The exhibition traced Ortiz’s artistic journey from his earliest work to his decades-long community impact as a painter, muralist, and mentor.

The show featured a comprehensive collection of Ortiz’s drawings and paintings spanning his

career, highlighting his evolution as a visual artist and cultural advocate. A special companion

exhibit in the smaller gallery showcased artwork created by apprentices and muralist crew

members who grew up at Hijos del Sol (Children of the Sun), which he founded in 1994. HDS

offered an experimental art studio space where youth can develop their creative minds and artistic skills, paving the way for self-discovery.

With Native American origins in Mexico, José Ortiz was brought to the United States at age 10

to begin working in the agricultural industries in Salinas, California, alongside his mother. By

age 13, his artistic promise led him to join the Monterey County art movement, and he began

exhibiting his work publicly. Ortiz studied at Hartnell College, where he was hired as the

sculptor-in-residence and scene designer for The Western Stage. He acquired large-scale painting techniques under the mentorship of established professionals before transferring to UC Santa Cruz to continue his studies while contributing to his family’s expenses.

Over the course of his career, Ortiz has created more than 70 public artworks—both mobile and permanent—throughout Monterey County, most notably large-scale murals that celebrate the region’s diverse cultures and stories. The canvas paintings featured in this exhibition often served as preliminary studies for those monumental works. Ortiz also served as curator for the

annual Mi Casa es Tu Casa: Day of the Dead exhibition at the Pajaro Valley Arts Council and

Gallery for many years.

Ortiz also established the Días de los Muertos celebration in Salinas at the former CSUMB

Center for the Arts and Culture, along with Enid Ryce, Professor of Cinematic Arts and

Environmental Studies. He has received many awards, including the 1995 Benefactor of the

Arts and the 2007 Champion of the Arts Professional from the Arts Council for Monterey

County. He was also named a CSUMB Distinguished Fellow in 2000. As a graphic designer,

Ortiz has created imagery for major community events, theatrical productions, books, and logos.

He has brought the science of the arts to both public and private educational systems throughout his career.
